Berita 24 English - The first case of monkeypox has been found in Hong Kong, health officials said Tuesday. The symptoms were found in a 30-year-old man who came from the Philippines after visiting the US and Canada.

It is the first time the virus that causes monkeypox has been brought into Hong Kong. The World Health Organization has called monkeypox a global health emergency.

Like the rest of China, there have been no monkeypox cases in the Chinese special administrative region.

Usually, monkeypox causes mild symptoms like fever, aches, and sores on the skin.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, health officials said that Hong Kong's response level to the monkeypox outbreak will be raised to "alert."

More than 90 countries where monkeypox is not common have reported outbreaks. The number of confirmed cases has reached 52,700, and countries where monkeypox is not common have reported their first deaths from the disease.

This month, the Hong Kong government plans to buy a vaccine against monkeypox. It has also said that it is keeping a closer eye on the virus among travellers and in the local community.
